City & Guilds 6160-04: Level 3 Award in Control Entry and Arrangements for Confined Spaces, 1 Day Bolt On (6160-03)

This is a 1 day bolt on course to the 6160-03. Only delegates who have completed the 6160-03 course may attend this course on day 4. If you book this course without completing the 6160-03, your place will be cancelled and reimbursed.

Description

This course is for the entry controller/top person who controls entry and arrangements for confined spaces without entering them. It includes the duties of an entry controller, pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for controlling entry and arrangements at a confined space. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas. 

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

 

Topics

  1. Implement procedures for teams working in confined spaces including interpreting the work plan, checking all equipment is available and pre-operation checks complete, completion of the POWRA, organisation of a competent work team.
  2. Control safe entry and exit to the confined space including checking atmospheric conditions, following correct  procedures for RPE, maintain gas monitoring records, resolving entry/exit problems and identifying unsafe activity.
  3. Monitor the work team to ensure procedures are followed including controlling access to the site and monitoring of the work team.
  4. Control emergency situations including suitable emergency arrangements and recording/reporting any emergency incidents.
  5. Understand health & safety and environmental legislation including principles of health & safety and environmental legislation.
  6. Understand standard protocols for work in confined spaces including the Water UK OGN classification scheme, risk weighting factors, communication methods and lines of communication for controlling work and CS procedures and methods.
  7. Understand entry controller duties and responsibilities including pre-entry briefings, key requirements for safe entry points, understanding of ventilation systems, vigilance of hazards, decontamination procedures, safe & secure entry points, types of reporting documentation, emergency reporting systems.
  8. Understand equipment checks and testing including PPE standards, actions to take when dealing with faulty equipment, use of safety, escape & emergency equipment and defects in equipment. 

Prerequisites

  • Candidates should bring their own safety footwear, Cotton or Waterproof Overalls, hard hat and working gloves for the practical exercises.
  • Any person attending this course should be physically and mentally fit to withstand the rigours of training.
  • Candidates should be able to read, write and understand English as all documentation, presentations and examination paperwork will be in English only.
