Description

This course is for those working in a high risk environment and includes preparing to work safely, entering and exiting high risk confined spaces safely, using equipment and tools safely, following procedures and dealing with emergencies.

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for a high risk related confined space environment. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas.

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

  1. Prepare to work safely in high risk confined spaces including maintaining safety zones, ensuring communication is in place, checking of equipment and appropriate use of PPE.
  2. Entering & exiting a high risk confined space safely including recording the results of monitoring equipment, checking access equipment, obtaining authorisation for entry, H&S information, resolving entry/exit/rescue problems and identifying unsafe activity.
  3. Use equipment & tools safely including checking of equipment & tools, PPE and after use checks.
  4. Follow working procedures and work safely including suitable communication methods, safe working procedures, monitoring conditions, the use of correct PPE, demonstrate vigilance in risks & hazards and completing documentation & reports correctly.
  5. Deal with emergencies including pre-use checks on safety, escape & emergency equipment, emergency exit procedures and recording & reporting emergency incidents.
  6. Understand the principals of working in high risk confined spaces including health & safety, environmental legislation regulations & guidance, confined space hazards, workplace exposure limits, gases, types & causes of emergencies, job roles & responsibilities, manufacturers instructions for safety, escape and emergency equipment, equipment defects and malfunctions, ventilation systems, confined scape incidents and the importance of decontamination procedures.
  7. Understand standard protocols for working in high risk confined spaces including confined space classifications, procedures & methods of working in confined spaces, how to reduce risks, communication methods and emergency reporting procedures.

Prerequisites

  • Candidates should bring their own safety footwear, Cotton or Waterproof Overalls, hard hat and working gloves for the practical exercises.
  • Any person attending this course should be physically and mentally fit to withstand the rigours of training.
  • Candidates should be able to read, write and understand English as all documentation, presentations and examination paperwork will be in English only.
