City & Guilds 6160-09: Level 2 Award in Entrant and Entry Controller for Medium Risk Confined Spaces

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for controlling entry and arrangements for working in a medium risk confined space environment. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas.

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

Topics:

1. Prepare to work safely in medium risk confined spaces including checking equipment, authorisation & health & safety information, communications, maintaining a safety zone, carry out a Point of Work Risk Assessment & monitoring equipment.
2. Entering & exiting a confined space safely including the use of the monitoring equipment, checking access equipment, carrying out a safety inspection, following procedures, resolving exit/entry problems & identifying unsafe activity.
3. Work safely and monitor the work team to ensure procedures are followed.
4. Deal with emergency situations including making emergency arrangements and following emergency procedures.
5. Understand the principles of working in medium risk confined spaces including identifying the main principles of health and safety and environmental legislation and describing hazards, substances, and situations associated with different types of confined spaces.
6. Understand standard protocols for work in medium risk confined spaces including describing communication methods and lines of communication for controlling work in medium risk confined spaces and describing procedures and methods used for working in confined spaces.
7. Understand entry controller duties and responsibilities including describing confined space incidents and their effect on personnel and explaining how to close down and make entry points safe and secure.
8. Understand equipment checks and inspection required including identifying defects and actions to take when dealing with faulty equipment.

• Candidates should bring their own safety footwear, Cotton or Waterproof Overalls, hard hat and working gloves for the practical exercises.
• Any person attending this course should be physically and mentally fit to withstand the rigours of training.
• Candidates should be able to read, write and understand English as all documentation, presentations and examination paperwork will be in English only.
